Wanted fugitive from New Jersey caught in Salisbury

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - A man who is listed on a New Jersey Sheriff's Most Wanted poster has been apprehended in Salisbury.

Michael McGaffney, 53, was wanted by the Atlantic County Sheriff's Department on charges of burglary, failure to appear, and weapon possession.

McGaffney was booked into the Rowan County jail just after midnight.  He is being held under $500,000 bond, charged as a fugitive from justice.

According to the police report, officers got a tip that McGaffney was staying in a residence at 804 Bringle Ferry Road.

Police were able to watch the house for a while and saw McGaffney walking around in the kitchen, according to the report.

Three police officers, with assistance from deputies from the Rowan Sheriff's Office, knocked on the door but no one answered.

Police reported that they could see a curtain moving on an upstairs window.  After a few minutes police broke the door down and went inside.  The found McGaffney hiding in the closet of an upstairs bedroom.

McGaffney will be taken back to New Jersey to faces charges there.
