CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Charlotte-area doctor has been suspended from a local hospital after he was arrested and accused of indecent exposure.

Sixty-three-year-old Allen John Cherer was booked in the Mecklenburg County jail on Sunday afternoon around 2 p.m.

He was charged with misdemeanor indecent exposure.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police say they arrested Cherer after a report of suspicious activity at a rest stop on I-77 at the state line. A police officer said in his report that Cherer exposed himself in the parking lot.

According to his biography on the Carolinas Healthcare System website, Cherer specializes in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Hospital officials say Dr. Cherer is a Carolinas HealthCare System employee and has been for just over a year now.

WBTV has learned Cherer's medical work has taken him to seven states where he was licensed to practice medicine. A search of available medical board records from several states shows no disciplinary action taken against the doctor.

"He has been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of our investigation," hospital officials told WBTV.

Cherer is licensed to treat patients in North Carolina and California.

He is slated to be in court on the charges in mid-September.
