FERRYLAND, NEWFOUNDLAND (CBC NEWS/CNN) – In Canada, an archaeology student’s tiny discovery at the site of an English settlement in Newfoundland is a big historical win.

Anna Sparrow had spent hours carefully sifting through dirt, broken pottery and glass when she unearthed the 400-year-old copper crucifix.

Sparrow says she’s surprised to make such an important find because she’s new at this.

“I wasn’t expecting to find something quite so spectacular, especially not in my second week,” Sparrow said. “It was very exciting.”

The cross is a little more than inch wide and the top portion is missing.

It shows the crucifixion on one side and the Virgin Mary on the other.
