Author claims mythical mountain creatures actually existed

SYLVA, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A researcher has published a new book in which she said details evidence that mythological creatures from Cherokee legends actually existed in the Western North Carolina mountains.

Mary Joyce spoke to a small crowd in the City Lights book store in Sylva on Friday night and shared information from the book titled "The Cherokee Little People Were Real."

She described the creatures as tiny humans who lived in underground tunnels.

Joyce said these creature lived in the area before the Cherokee called the Carolinas home. Joyce said the Cherokee passed down legends about the tiny people, who tended their gardens at night. The Cherokee called them "moon people," according to Joyce.

Joyce's book contains interviews from people who have seen mysterious tunnels and details about possible skeletal evidence.

"I think people need to open their minds, look at some of this concrete evidence, and be open to it," Joyce said. "Because we're too quick to just dismiss things like this couldn't be. Well so many things that couldn't be have actually become reality."

Joyce said she has even heard from some people who have seen evidence that the little people of Cherokee legend may still be living in the area.

Joyce's book is on sale at the City Lights bookstore.
