Multiple child sex abuse allegations reported over past few weeks

Posted: Updated:

A middle school math teacher and Boy Scout troop leader accused of sexually abusing children bonded out of jail Thursday.

Detectives in Rowan County say James Barringer III molested three young boys. Barringer is just the latest person in our area whose job it was to take care of your children, but is now charged with sex crimes.

The following men and woman mentioned below were not registered sex offenders before their alleged encounters. That's why it is difficult for parents to track people that may bring harm to their child. A local child psychologist has ideas for what parents can say to kids that makes sense and keeps them safe.

In October 2012, WBTV spoke to former Charlotte Boy Scout leader Thomas Menghi. At the time he gave an interview with the Associated Press, admitting to having sex with underage boys in the 1970s. Police never arrested Menghi, because despite his self incrimination, no alleged victims ever came forward.

In the past few weeks, several similar cases have made headlines. James Barringer III did have alleged victims surface. Rowan County deputies just arrested the eighth-grade China Grove Middle School teacher on Wednesday. He's also an athletic director and assistant scoutmaster accused of molesting young boys.

"It's a tragedy," said Charlotte child psychologist Dr. Sean Knuth.

Knuth says the amount of sexual allegations involving community leaders and children over the past few weeks is troubling.

"It can happen and hopefully it gets people talking about it. Hopefully it gets people seeking treatment about it," he said.

Just last week, former Iredell County teacher John Thomas Patterson got word he'll spend the rest of his life behind bars. A jury found him guilty of 170 counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Authorities also recently arrested another former Iredell County School employee. Police charged Glen McCoy, 30, for his alleged involvement with a 17-year-old boy he met online.

Back in April, Cleveland County teacher Caron Blanton went to jail after she allegedly sent nude videos of herself to an underage student.

On Wednesday, detectives in Hickory arrested Crisofor Casareal for taking indecent liberties with a child at an unlicensed daycare run by his wife.

Also this week, a high school science teacher and wrestling coach is on trial after he was charged with 15 felony counts of sex crimes against children.

According to records in Gaston County, 44-year-old Gary Goins is facing multiple charges involving underage children.

Dr. Knuth says the best thing to do is talk about these incidents with your children. It may protect them in the future.

"Listen to every question your child has. Tell them the question is a good question. Answer it as best as you can. Let them know whatever they are feeling is ok and natural. These are scary things, but there are people out there who can help them get through it," he said.
