CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - This will be some dinner. A total of 10,450 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority will sit down at 1,000 tables to dine at Charlotte Convention Center today as part of their convention this week.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's governor is responding to criticism for bypassing a traditional selection process in choosing a poet laureate with only two self-published books to her name. Gov. Pat McCrory says he seeks to give opportunities to those who aren't part of "elite groups." But McCrory also says he will review the process he used to choose Valerie Macon.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's Supreme Court is temporarily blocking the release on bail of a man a judge described as probably innocent despite nearly 20 years in prison on a marred double-murder conviction. The state Supreme Court ordered that the effort to free 52-year-old Darryl Howard from prison stay on hold.

BALTIMORE (AP) - A transgender woman found slain in Baltimore is the sibling of an NBA player.

Reggie Bullock of the Los Angeles Clippers says Mia Henderson, who was born Kevin Long, was his brother. Bullock is heading into his second season with the Clippers. He was a first-round draft pick last year out of the University of North Carolina.
