Tuesday’s rain damages cars, Matthews auto shop

Heavy rain pounded the Metro area Tuesday evening, one of the hardest areas hit was Matthews.

The town saw nearly 5-inches of rain and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage at one local business.

"It was a feeling that I don't ever want to experience again," said Axley Collision Center Owner Neal Axley.

It's almost like the difference between night and day at Axley's Collision Center in Matthews, where less than 24 hours ago, Axley's lot full of cars was submerged under water.

Wednesday, WBTV got an up close look at the damage as Axley showed us around.

The interiors and exteriors of 10 cars are covered with dirt and mud.

Axley says the damage from the cars alone top $200,000, that's not including damage to his actual shop and belongings lost.

He says the sight of Tuesday's destruction will stick with him for a lifetime.

"It'll be a long time before I'm able to forget it, that's for sure. I doubt I'll ever forget it," said Axley.

Several customers stopped by the shop to look at their damaged cars, but they were too emotional to speak with WBTV.

Thankfully, Axley says all of the cars on his property were insured.

He went on to say the devastation at his shop has put things in perspective for him.

"I got a life lesson in the fact that life is so precious and it could very easily be taken from us and yesterday was just another example of that," said Axley.

Axley says all of that damage was caused in about 30 minutes, thankfully, no one at the shop or in the neighborhood was injured.
