SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) -

Security at the Rowan County Magistrate's Office has been upgraded after last week's escape of a man who was in the custody of deputies.

Jameel Stephens-Maddox was able to wriggle out of his handcuffs, go through the back door, climb over a fence and escape after being brought into the office last Tuesday.

Stephens-Maddox is still on the run, but it may be more difficult for the next potential escapee to take flight.

On Wednesday Rowan Sheriff Kevin Auten showed WBTV new security measures.  The upgrades include new rows of razor wire fencing across the chain link fence, improvements to the back door, new cameras and a refocus of the cameras in place, and a steel bar across the bottom of the chain link fence.

Auten told WBTV that the new improvements should help a great deal in keeping prisoners both inside the building, and within the fence at the back of the office.
