Who is shooting the cows in Caldwell County?

Posted: Updated:

Jack Starnes is not too happy these days. Someone has been stopping by the roadside and shooting at his herd of cows.

"It's just meanness," he says.

Six cows have been hit since May and two have died.

"And these cows are ones with calves too," said Starnes.

Caldwell County Sheriff's Investigator M.H. Coleman says authorities are working on the case but it is tough to crack unless someone spots the shooter or has information that can lead to an arrest.

"We want to hear from anyone who has information."

Coleman said the person could face felony charges for what they have done to the cows.

"They are intentionally shooting them to watch them suffer," he said.

Starnes says he can't understand why anyone would do what they are doing. It is believed the culprit is driving along Petra Mill Road and then stopping to fire at the cows with a rifle.

In the pasture on Monday, two cows could be seen limping from gunshot wounds, trying to keep up with the herd.

Depending on how their recovery goes, they might have to be put down. Besides the cruelty aspect of this Starnes says it is costing him a lot of money.

The cows could bring anywhere from $800 to $1000 at auction. His main concern he says is  the well being of his animals.

"This shouldn't be happening to them," he said and added, "it is someone without a conscience."

Investigators want anyone with information to contact the Caldwell County Sheriff's office.
