Man gets life sentence for killing wife, granddaughter

A York County man has been sentenced to life in prison after he plead guilty to killing his 71-year-old wife and 9-year-old granddaughter earlier this year.

Sixty-seven-year-old Ronald Gregory admitted to shooting and killing 71 year-old Barbara Gregory and 9-year-old Mia Rodgers inside their York County home back in late March.

He was sentenced in court on Monday afternoon to two life sentenced. Prosecutors said they will not seek the death penalty.

Gregory said he couldn't take care of his wife and granddaughter and told authorities killing them was the only way he could provide to them.

Gregory told investigators he shot Barbara in the chest and she died immediately.
Gregory says he shot 9-year-old Mia in her room. She didn't die right away, suffering for an hour, he told police.

16th  circuit Solicitor Kevin Brackett says this was one of the most emotional cases he's handled.

"Any case involving a child is always going to be difficult, but this case in particular is one of the most difficult cases I've ever had to deal with," said Solicitor Brackett.

The courts determined Gregory is mentally ill and while in prison he will be treated for his mental illness.

He will be housed in prison with the rest of the inmates.

"It was that terrible of a case. It was truly horrible what that child went through and it's one of those I'll carry with me," said Solicitor Brackett.

Solicitor Brackett went on to say his team won't try for the death penalty in this case because the family of Gregory didn't want to proceed, citing Gregory's age and the circumstances of the situation.
