Boyfriend of Bianca Tanner indicted by grand jury for murder

The boyfriend of Bianca Tanner was indicted by a Mecklenburg County grand jury last week for her murder.

The indictment of first degree murder was handed down on July 7 against Angelo Grayson Smith Jr.

Police say Smith intentionally killed Tanner after the two got into an argument at his apartment and then hid her body to conceal the crime.

The documents also show Smith cannot afford an attorney so he was given representation from the Public Defender's Office. Court records show Smith's new attorney is Susan Weigand.

The Sheriff's office reports the only people who have visited Smith in jail so far are his attorneys.

Smith originally told police that the two had been drinking on June 8, got into an argument where Tanner stormed out.

Tanner's body was found in early July in a wooded area off of Calico Crossing Lane.

The warrant lists Lawrence Briscoe as a witness to the crime. He is believed to be the person to show police where Tanner's body was located.

WBTV went to the addresses listed for Briscoe hoping to get his story. No one answered.

Sources say Smith possibly went to visit Briscoe the night Tanner disappeared and left Tanner's 3-year-old son home alone.

Smith was taken into custody by US Marshals in Chicago after Charlotte police wanted to question him in the case.

Tanner was teacher in Guilford County and had recently moved to Charlotte with her son to try and land a teaching job.

Sources close to the investigation have told WBTV that Smith has admitted to killing Tanner.
