(WMC) - The man who was hit by a train while jogging in Germantown on Sunday has been identified as 59-year-old George Holmes.

He runs a video production company based on Beale Street. It's called Beale Street Studios.

On Sunday Holmes was just minutes from his house in Germantown when he died in what police describe as a total accident.

Investigators say the train conductor saw a man running down the tracks in front of him. He immediately pulled the emergency brake and started blowing the horn, but the train did not stop in time.

Holmes was killed immediately.

Investigators say Holmes never heard the horn, possibly because he was jogging on the train tracks while listening to music through his earphones.

Holmes' family says he runs in that area frequently. They also say it's not unusual for him to have earphones in during the run.

Train accidents killed 10 people in 2012, six in 2013, and two so far this year.

"Distractions are on the rise, and unfortunately it's interfering with people's ability to focus on safety as they approach a railroad track," Carol Steckbeck said. She's with Operation Lifesaver, a non-profit trying to raise awareness about distractions around railroad tracks.
