LATTA, S.C. (AP) - A small town in South Carolina has rallied to save the job of the police chief, who says she was fired because she is gay.

Voters in Latta stripped all the power from the mayor who fired Police Chief Crystal Moore with a two-thirds vote in June, just two months after Moore lost her job.

That surprised many people. About 86 percent of voters in Latta approved a state amendment banning gay marriage eight years ago.

But residents say Moore dedication was more important than her sexual orientation. The 42-year-old chief has been an officer in her hometown for over 20 years.

Mayor Earl Bullard denies he fired Moore because she is gay. He says she was insubordinate.
