FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The mayor Fayetteville wants a citywide curfew for youth.

The Fayetteville Observer reported (http://bit.ly/1jjh4xK) that Mayor Nat Robertson also wants an ordinance to ban loitering around schools.

Robertson said Thursday he has asked city staff to research the legal and practical issues of implementing a curfew for children under 16.

Cumberland County has had such a curfew since 1997 that is in effect from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Robertson says it would be a good idea to follow Cumberland County in making loitering near school property a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine.

Robertson says such an ordinance could stop drug dealing and gang activity near schools. He says the school system has requested such an ordinance.

He says city council could consider the idea next month.
