There is something missing along the streets of the Town of Rhodhiss.
Unlike most communities, there are no mailboxes dotting the landscape. There is no door-to-door mail delivery in the town that straddles the Burke and Caldwell County line.
Instead, everyone who wants mail delivery has a box in the small Post Office in town.
"It's a very important place for me," said Pat Norton. She and other residents were afraid budget cuts would mean moving all mail service to another town. This week, though, postal officials announced the Rhodhiss office would stay open but hours for the front counter would be cut from 44 to 26 hours a week.
"I will just have to adjust," said longtime resident Larry Weaver.
Others say while it will make it tougher to pick up and mail packages and buy stamps, the cutback in hours is better than the alternative.
"It's a big thing for us to have a post office," said Pat Logan.
Town officials said they hope the talk of any more cuts is over.
