HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Two toddlers were laid to rest Monday after drowning in a Gratiot County pond on Thursday, July 10.

The sheriff's office was called to an address in Gratiot County's Hamilton Township in reference to the two missing boys.

Deputies searched the area when they arrived and found the 2-year-old and 3-year-old brothers in a pond about 200 yards from their parents' home.

Xavier and Owen Cross were removed from the water with assistance from the Gratiot County Dive Team. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Everybody watches out for each other, you don't really think of this stuff happening in a small town," says Gratiot County resident Kayla Beracy.

For Gratiot County resident Betty Jo Peck, the situation is all too familiar. Nine years ago, her three year old grandson was killed in a tragic accident.

"Watch them every single minute, I mean, it's such a sad thing," says Peck. "The family needs to stick together no matter what, because families tend to break up when a tragedy like this happens."

The investigation is continuing pending the autopsy of the boys.

Gratiot County Sheriff Doug Wright said there is no evidence of foul play and the incident appears to be a tragic accident.

Services were held at 2 p.m. at the Walker-Martin Funeral Home in Chesaning.
