Police: Charlotte homicides at lowest number in 10 years

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Charlotte is tracking its lowest number of homicides in the city in elevens years, tying 2011, according to data released by Charlotte police through the first six months of the year.

The data was requested by Charlotte City Council.

Through June 24, there were 17 homicides in the city compared to 21 during the same time period in 2013.

In 14 of those homicides, the victim and shooter were known to one another.

Police Chief Rodney Monroe says the department is taking a number of initiatives to reduce the homicide rate, including forming task force in each patrol division of the city.
