CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A newly released autopsy report shows 17-month-old Kyiemani Brewer was physically assaulted last year.

Her little body was covered in bruises and lacerations. She also had multiple fractures and internal injuries according to the report.

22-year-old Jade Sheree Butler and 21-year-old Antonio Fernelle Cathey are both charged with murder and child abuse.  Butler is currently out on bond.

Butler's daughter was found unresponsive in October.  Detectives and the Medical Examiner's Office say Kyiemani suffered several traumatic injuries at the time.

Garmarie Bennett, Cathey's mother, told WBTV Butler and her son are innocent after their first court hearing. She said Kyiemani had a muscle and bone disorder which led to bruising and had been hospitalized in the past few months.

"I think she died from that illness," said Bennett. "My son just did the best for her...like that was his own blood daughter," she said.

The autopsy makes no mention of a pre existing disease.

WBTV asked DSS about a possible prior investigation, which Bennett said cleared the couple of abuse allegations. A representative from DSS would not confirm or deny that an investigation ever existed.

However, Kyiemani's case is being reviewed by the state's child fatality team through DHHS. It reviews cases of DSS-involved children who died.
