(CNN) – It's the Fourth of July and that means fireworks, picnics and feats of food!

The annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest crowned Joey "Jaws" Chestnut its champion for the eighth straight year Friday. The top-ranked competitive eater earned the Mustard Belt by downing 61 dogs and buns in 10 minutes before a patriotic crowd chanting, "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!"

Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas failed to notch her fourth consecutive title in the women's competition. Miki Sudo won the day by polishing off 34, compared to Thomas' 27 3/4.

Thomas set the woman's record at 45 a year ago. Chestnut also fell short of his record-setting tally of 69, which he managed in 2013.

Matt Stonie was again the runner-up in the men's field but topped his total of 51 from a year ago with 56.

The yearly Independence Day gathering took place at New York’s Coney Island Amusement Park, and the event aired live on ESPN News.
