MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - It's not often that Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong is on the front lines, but days ago Armstrong found himself in the middle of a wild police chase.

Armstrong remained calm, and the officers also involved in the pursuit very professional as everyone worked together to safely capture the suspect.

"I can only imagine being an officer and listening to the radio and listening to the director asking for additional cars," said Armstrong.

That was Memphis police director Toney Armstrong last Friday after he initiated what became a 22-mile police chase when he spotted a man pulling a gun in the parking lot at Jack Pirtle's; where he had stopped for lunch.

Armstrong: "Could you start some cars to the Jack Pirtle's on Danny Thomas just North of Chelsea. I have an armed party. Have them expedite."

That was the first call Armstrong made to dispatch that began the chase across the city with an 18-wheeler.

Armstrong: "It's going to be a male black with a beard and eyeglasses, dark blue shirt, blue jeans. Apparently he's involved with another male in an altercation."

Dispatch: "The subjects are now firing shots at each other but they do see officers pulling up."

Officers responded quickly moving into the chase with their director.

Officer: "Individual headed southbound on I-240 going toward the South Parkway exit."

Armstrong: "Be advised I am in a pursuit. All cars in the pursuit are necessary at this time."

Officers drove the speed limit during the pursuit.

Officer: "If you will go ahead and notify Collierville."

It ended at Winchester Road and Highway 385 when the suspect pulled over.

Officer: "We have him in custody."

And just like in the movies, police recovered the handgun from the 18-wheeler.

Armstrong: "Good job gentlemen."

Herold Depriest was charged with aggravated assault and evading arrest. There are no details on why he had the gun or took off.
