SLIDELL, LA (WAFB) -

The Slidell Police Department reports that an alert citizen and the swift actions of a police officer saved the life of a 5-week-old child.

The infant was inside a vehicle in a Slidell strip mall, with outside temperatures reaching over 90 degrees. The alert citizen saw the infant and immediately called 911. A Slidell Police Officer arrived and used a "lock-out kit" to get inside the vehicle.

Reports say the child was unresponsive, sweating profusely, and had internal temperatures that were at a deadly level.

The child was taken to the hospital and revived and has since made a full recovery.

The infant’s mother, 44-year-old Gloria Elzy of Slidell, came running out of the store when she saw Slidell Police standing around her vehicle. When the officers told Elzy why they were there, she was in complete shock and told officers that she forgot her child was even inside of the car.

Elzy claimed she dropped off her other children at a friend’s house, and totally forgot to take her 5-week-old out of the car. Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith says, “With all the media attention on this type of issue, it’s mind boggling to me that someone can leave, better yet, forget, about a child inside of a vehicle.”

Elzy was placed under arrest for felony second degree cruelty to juveniles and for a failure to appear warrant. She is currently being held at the Slidell City Jail, and will later be transported to the St. Tammany Parish Jail.
