FLOYD COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - The Floyd County Sheriff's Office is investigating a case of vandalism after someone rearranged letters on a sign to spell out racist and hateful words.

Vandals switched out letters on both sides of a marquee sign in front of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Pastor Frank Pendleton said the marquee was changed between 6 p.m. July 1 and 6 a.m. July 2.

"This is not the stance of the United Methodist Church in any way, shape, form or fashion. We do apologize for this vandalism happening for anyone who's seen it, especially children," Pastor Pendleton said.

One side said "Call Satan a n-(word)." The other side included the message "Love Satan, Our Ruler." Two wheelchair symbols were included on the sign.

Church members Bob and Ruth Graddy called the Floyd County Sheriff's Office when they noticed the derogatory language

"It should say 'Give Satan an inch and he'll be your ruler," Bob Graddy said.

Floyd County deputies are checking out area churches to see if vandals targeted other places of worship.
