Bob Phillips admits his proposal to his wife Gail wasn't the most romantic.
For their sacrifices, both Todd and Cathy received the prestigious Purple Heart for wounded warriors.
They didn't know each other back then.
"We met because we got blown up. It's an explosive relationship. That's actually how we met, we met at the Wounded Warrior Battalion," said Todd Shaw.
The pair got married in 2012, and until recently, they were the only married couple with Purple Hearts in the country. Now, they are one of two.
This year someone anonymously nominated them for a home makeover from Rebuilding Together and the Shaws were chosen.
"Their story is incredibly compelling, having two Purple Heart veterans and five kids between them, and most of either the kids or the kids' boyfriends or fiances or husbands are in the military," said Megan Kruse, AmeriCorps project coordinator.
The work on the house began on Tuesday and the mayor honored the couple by declaring Clarksville a Purple Heart City.
It's an effort that has touched the hearts of this very deserving husband and wife.
