BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A teenager had to be rescued after falling over a waterfall in Burke County Tuesday, according to officials.

The incident happened at High Shoals Falls in South Mountain State Park just after 6 p.m.

Seventeen-year-old Patrick Mereno fell from the falls and was seriously injured. Mereno's family told WBTV that Patrick is a rising senior at Kings Mountain High School.

According to officials, Mereno fell 60 feet from the falls, and broke several bones.

Two dozen rescuers climbed down to where he fell, took him across the gorge to a trail, then carried him the rest of the way out.

He was then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.

A witness who saw Mereno fall said she ran about a mile to a ranger station to report the incident.

"It was terrifying," she said, "I didn't expect to see anything like that. I was taking pictures of nature."

WBTV is working to gather more information and will post updates as they become available.
