Hannah Starnes smiled as she sat on her front porch Tuesday afternoon, reading through her 2011 Newton-Conover High School Yearbook.
"She was the best," Starnes said as she turned to a page showing Margaret Daniels, a former English teacher. "She was more than a teacher. She was a friend."
Daniels was found dead in her apartment on Saturday. Police tell WBTV they are now investigating her death as a homicide. Police said autopsy results revealed that there was "foul play" involved.
The 31 year old was a popular guidance counselor and coach who was once named teacher of the year for Newton Conover City Schools.
Hannah Starnes tells WBTV Daniels was her favorite teacher.
"She had a heart of gold and nobody is going to ever be able to replace her," Starnes said. "She is going to be greatly missed. She was just a great person on the inside and out and did anything and everything she could."
Investigators are still trying to figure out who killed Daniels. WBTV is working to learn more about the investigation.
