Traffic at Charlotte-Douglas could slow you down

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Traffic is a major problem at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. If you have to take someone to the airport or you're flying out, be prepared.

Parking lots are full, the construction on the entrance road is confusing and there are often traffic jams to get to the terminal.

If you're looking for a parking spot at Charlotte Douglas International it might take you awhile. The construction on the new parking deck combined with peak summer time travel means more people fewer spots.

"They were all full, closed," said Demitrez Butler who couldn't find a long-term spot and parked in daily parking.

Butler is heading out on a business trip.

"Probably costs a little but more you know we got to catch the flight so keep going," said Butler.

Officials with the Charlotte Douglas Airport say parking is at a premium so they recommend that you get to the airport two hours before your flight or plan ahead and have somebody drop you off.

"I just made the loop before and I saw people frantically looking at the closed lots what they were going to do to get on their flight.  I saw one guy park in the grass," said Carolyn Bartlett of Statesville.

Carolyn Bartlett is a missionary who will be taking a trip to Mexico in a couple of weeks.  She won't try to park. Some people take taxis or limo services.  Bartlett relies on friends.

"We will have drop off people to bring us to drop us off," Bartlett said.

Friday she was waiting in the cell phone lot for her husband. "Picking up here, I noticed it's starting to back up here as well," she said.

Friends in the cell phone lot don't have to pay a fee to park but they can't leave the car.

"You sit here and wait until someone calls you and says come pick me up and you go through," said Dan Latos of Harrisburg,"I know it's really slow going through arrivals. Its takes forever in that line sometime."

Tim Shue and his dog Tillie are waiting for his wife who flies three times a month.

"The parking is so bad we're not going to consider the parking situation," saud Shue, "So, we just do the cell phone lot."
