CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
Kelly Wolff with Charlotte Plastic Surgery offers her advice for protecting your skin in the hot summer months. Her recommendations and tips follow:
SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is the measurement of how much UV radiation it takes to cause your skin to become red or burn while wearing a sunscreen (SPF 30 will allow you to stay in the sun 30x longer before burning).
When choosing a sunscreen you need to consider the amount of time you will be spending outdoors and your outdoor activities. For example you may use a different sun protection when you are outside playing with your kids versus spending the day at the beach.
It is best to apply sun protection at least 20 minutes before exposing the area to the sun or jumping in the water. A liberal amount is needed to give your skin the best protection.
If you are planning to spend several hours outdoors you need to reapply your sunscreen to protect you from burning. The active ingredients in all sunscreens will begin to fade after an hour. Reapplying sunscreen is determined on the SPF and your skin type. If you burn easily you will want to reapply your sunscreen hourly.
