CASSELBERRY, FL (WKMG/SEMINOLE COUNTY JAIL/CNN) – A newborn baby is now in state custody after Casselberry, FL police say Sara Markham refused to take her dehydrated baby to the hospital.

Markham told police she is a vegan and bought a soy-based formula from Whole Foods for the baby, instead of following the doctor's orders.

"Her explanation was she didn't want her child ingesting any animal byproducts," Casselberry Police Department Cpl. Kristine Pamatian said.

A doctor told Markham that they baby was dehydrated and losing weight, according to a police report. The doctor told Markham to go to the hospital within the hour.

The hospital was waiting with a bed ready to treat the child, but when the mother didn't show, police showed up at Markham's apartment. Officers and Child Protective Services tried to get her to come to the door for an hour.

"She didn't think she had to answer the door," Pamatian said.

Officers called her uncooperative, and said she was not concerned with her newborn's well-being.

Police later used a locksmith to get into Markham's apartment and interview her. She was arrested later after continuing to refuse to take the baby to the hospital.

The baby is now being treated in a hospital and is in state custody.

Markham has been released on bond.
