Deputies: Man arrested after Union Co break-in, chase

A man was arrested Wednesday after deputies say he broke into a house, stole a car and led authorities on a chase.

Gabriel Martinez Castro, 21, was arrested around 7:15 p.m. Officials said he was being interviewed by detectives and that he will face charges related to the home break-in and vehicle theft, as well as charges related to the chase.

The incident began just before 1:30 p.m. when Union County deputies responded to a break-in call at a home on Pumpernickel Lane, in the Village of Wesley Chapel. The homeowner's vehicle was reportedly stolen during the break-in.

About 20 minutes later, deputies spotted the car several miles from the home and attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to stop.

Deputies pursued the vehicle until the driver crashed on Weddington Road near Underwood Road. The driver, however, then took off on foot.

A search then began for the driver, and included NC Highway Patrol, the Waxhaw Police Department, Monroe Police Department and the Stallings Police Department.

WBTV's Sky 3 also assisted in the search.

More than five hours later, Castro was located hiding under a deck at a home on Plymouth Drive in Weddingon and was taken into custody.
