Greenville police said they chased after a man accused of robbing a Family Dollar at gunpoint but when they found the weapon, they discovered it was a toy gun.
Police said the robbery was reported at the Pendleton Street store on Tuesday and an alert was issued for the suspect's vehicle.
When officers spotted the car, police said a brief chase began before the suspect jumped out and took off running on foot.
An officer was able to catch the man but during the foot chase, police said he threw a gun into the woods, which a Greenville County K-9 was able to find.
According to the arrest warrants, the gun was determined to be a toy gun. The warrants state the suspect demanded money from the register be placed into a shopping bag and pointed to his waistband.
The clerk saw what looked like a gun and gave him the money, according to the warrants. They state that when police arrested the man, he had the bag of cash on him with nearly $500 inside.
Joseph Booker, 20, of Greenville, was charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime and armed robbery. Jail records show he was also charged with resisting arrest and failure to stop for blue lights.
