Helping parents find the best child care

Posted: Updated:

Detectives in Harnett County say a pseudo daycare was a front for a child porn ring. Five people have been arrested and at least ten children victimized.

The accused operator, Bailey Joe Mills, is also a previous child sex offender. Detectives say the business operating out of his former home was not like a true daycare. It was not regulated or licensed by the State.

The case does raise the question about who parents can trust to watch their children.

Denise Squier with Child Care Resources, Inc in Charlotte says it can be a challenging process for parents to navigate.

The non-profit agency helps parents find the best fit for their family based on the child, location, and cost. Squier says they always start with licensed facilities because they have some oversight from the State. Background checks are required.

"With regulated programs you can go in and see what their history has been with licensing," said Squier. Parents can also see previous violations.

To understand how child care facilities and home daycares are licensed, including what to look for and how they are rated, click here to get information from the Department of Health and Human Services. Parents can search for a facility by name, or by zip code.

As for the case in Harnett County, Bailey Mills has a criminal record that was free and easy to view on the North Carolina Department of Corrections website. Parents can use the website to search anyone's name who has contact with their children.

Many police departments and sheriff's offices provide free online access to arrest records and incidents. Click here to view the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office portal and search arrests.

The National Sex Offender Registry is another website to search. None of the websites can guarantee someone's criminal past is clear, but they do provide a starting point.
