LENOIR, NC (WBTV) -

The two met in prison years ago and became friends. Early Tuesday, one was dead, the other charged with murder.

"It's just so sad," said one neighbor on Bradford Street.

Bobby Sparks is charged in the killing of Sammy Sturgill, whose body was found on the front steps of Sparks' home.

"He was a good guy," said Victor Massingle of Sparks.

Police are still trying to figure out exactly what happened between the two but arrested Sparks and placed him in the Caldwell County Jail where he sits without bond.

"He was just defending himself," said Bobby's daughter, Laura. The family told WBTV that Bobby had recently married Sturgill's ex-girlfriend, and that Sturgill was not happy about it.

"He was threatening my daddy," said another daughter, Sheila.

Sturgill had a history of violence. In fact, when he met Sparks, he was serving time in prison for second-degree murder. Sparks was behind bars on a kidnapping conviction.

Just recently, Sturgill had been to court on a DWI charge and was free on bond in a case where he was accused of stabbing and wounding another man last spring.

As Sparks was taken from the courthouse after a first appearance before a judge Tuesday morning WBTV asked him what happened. All he would say was, "It was self defense."

Authorities are still looking into the situation involving Sturgill's death and will turn all findings over to the District Attorney's office.

"We still have a lot of work to do to finish the investigation, " said Lenoir Police Captain Couby Stilwell. "We have a couple of more weeks to go," he said.

The cause of Sturgill's death has not been released yet but an autopsy is expected in the next few days.

Sparks will have a probable cause hearing in Caldwell County District Court next month.
