CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Arson investigators continue to ask for the public's help, after a popular playground in Charlotte went up in flames over the weekend.

Arson investigators were called to the community playground in The Settlements along 12100 block of Prails Mill Road on Sunday afternoon. The incident happened just after 2 p.m.

Officers say firefighters were called to the fire, which is near the community pool, and were able to get the fire out in just a few minutes.

"It was probably a hundred feet in the air. It was a big fire," said neighbor Greg Purkey.

The park and playground are considered to be a total loss, estimated at $30,000. Purkey tells WBTV he helped build the playground several years ago.

"It's a shame people have to be doing this stuff," he said.

The playground fire is the second in Charlotte over the past several weeks. In May, officers responded to a fire in Abbott Park. Police have not caught a suspect in that fire. Arson detectives say the two may be related, but it's too early to tell.

"We need people to come forward," said CMPD Detective Robert Klass.

If you have any information about the fire, call CMPD Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. You can remain anonymous.
