Man serving life in prison pleads guilty to 1993 rape cases

A man serving life in prison for a 1993 rape conviction pleaded guilty to two other cold case rapes that occurred that same year.

Ricky Lee Grier, 48, pleaded guilty to two counts each of second-degree rape and second-degree sex offense and one count each of first and second-degree kidnapping, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Grier was already serving a life sentence for the rape of a third woman.

The first incident happened on February 23, 1993, when a woman getting into a car on North Graham Street was approached by a man wearing a ski mask. The man held a gun to the woman, forced her under a railroad bridge and sexually assaulted her.

The second incident happened on May 20, 1993. Officials say a man wearing a bandana over his face and carrying a knife forced a woman to go to a bank to withdraw cash and then back to her home where he raped her.

In both cases, the criminal told the victims to count to 50 as he fled the scene.

A third rape was committed on May 25, 1993. Grier was arrested in that case and, in 1994, was sentenced to life in prison.

Investigators said that the location of the three crimes and similarities in the cases led them to identify Grier as a suspect in the first two cases. Evidence was then re-examined and it was discovered that Grier's DNA matched DNA evidence collected at the scenes.

He was served the additional charges in 2013.
