17 Va. teens arrested on Myrtle Beach trip

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

More than a dozen central Virginia teens found themselves behind bars hundreds of miles away in Myrtle Beach, S.C. over the weekend.

Eleven of the 17 arrested are from New Kent County and one is from Colonial Heights. Four of the teens arrested in Myrtle Beach are under the age of 17.

The Horry County Sheriff's Department was not able to share much more information than what was published on the county's website. The majority of the teens were charged with underage purchasing of alcoholic beverages, consumption, or possession by a minor.

Based on information obtained from the Horry County Sheriff's Department's website, the teens were all booked in the jail sometime Saturday morning. By mid-afternoon on Saturday they had all made bail.

Becky Gettings with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control says the crackdown on underage drinking is becoming more widespread across the state and country. Here in Virginia, Gettings says they work alongside area businesses to insure alcoholic beverages do not end up in the hands of youth.

"Our ABC Bureau of law enforcement special agents train employees from convenience stores and restaurants in spotting things like fake ids to increase their compliance rates for not selling to underage," Gettings said.

Gettings says these are serious misdemeanor charges that could have a drastic impact on the lives of these young adults. In Virginia, that could mean up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

"They do not want a Class 1 misdemeanor on their resumes or when they apply for a job," Gettings said. "It has to be listed if it is a conviction."
