DAKOTA DUNES, SD (KMEG/CNN) – Folks along the Big Sioux River are moving fast to protect their homes and property from the rising river.

From Iowa to North and South Dakota, workers are building up levees along the Big Sioux.

This is all in preparation for record high flood waters. Days of heavy rains have swollen the waterway, threatening hundreds of homes.

The river is expected to crest Friday about a foot above the previous record level set before 1970.

The National Guard is helping residents sandbag and build ahead of the flooding.
