IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A former public information officer for Iredell-Statesville Schools was arrested Thursday on more than 15 charges including embezzlement.

Melissa Dawn Creason, 34, was arrested and charged with obtaining property by false pretenses and five felony counts of embezzlement of state property by an official.

The investigation began on April 10, when officials from Iredell-Statesville schools notified police of Creason's suspected criminal activity.

Officials said Creason misused travel funds and stole school system property.

Investigators from the Statesville Police Department and agents from the NC State Bureau of Investigation began a criminal investigation into those allegations before obtaining warrants for Creason's arrest.

Creason turned herself in Thursday and was placed under a $30,000 bond. She is due to make a first appearance in court on June 23.
