Rock Hill chosen to host 2017 BMX World Champsionships

ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) -

Rock Hill will host the 2017 BMX World Championships at its supercross track, the city announced on Friday.

The championships will take place July 26-30, 2017 at the Novant Health BMX Supercross Track on Riverwalk Parkway.

Training will be held on the 24 and 25 prior to the championships.

The championships are put on by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).

The event in Rock Hill is expected to bring an estimated 3,000 amateur participants and an estimated 300 professional athletes from over 40 countries, according to the city.

Participants and families who attend the event from all over the world will stay an average of 10 days in the host city.

The UCI BMX World Championships are held annually to crown a BMX Cycling World Champion, with the event being last held in the United States in Louisville, Kentucky in 2001. This year's Championships will be held in Rotterdam, Holland July 23-27, 2014.

In addition to the 2017 BMX World Championships, the Novant Health BMX Supercross Track will also host the 2014 Gold Cup East Finals October 10-12, 2014. That event is expected to draw over 800 participants, as well as some of the best junior and elite riders from all over the world battling for USA BMX pro points and UCI Olympic points, the city says.
