CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - An assault, a kidnapping and an attempted robbery-- all before 8:00 in the morning.
One crook in west Charlotte racked up those charges while getting nothing for his crime when he tried to rob the quick-thinking owner of the L-A Insurance business just off Wilkinson Boulevard.
No one was around when the owner arrived with his morning coffee just before 8:00 a.m. to open up. As he unlocked the front door, from surveillance video, we can see him sensing a threat. He tries to get inside to seal out trouble. But trouble has the advantage the strength to get in.
"He came up behind him," said CMPD Detective Marty Cuthbertson. "He actually charged the front door of the business and forced his way in."
During the struggle, the crook dropped something important-- his magazine of bullets.
He retrieved it, then ordered the owner to the money. We can see him rack the slide of his gun to mean business.
But this owner is crafty. He quickly ducks into the back office and closes a self-locking door.
"So he got frustrated, got mad and fired off a round towards the victim. He shot into the door but the bullet never penetrated because it was a bullet proof door."
The owner wasn't hurt and the bad guy left in a hurry empty handed.
In one short minute, the gunman committed three felonies. "We got assault, kidnapping and attempted robbery."
The bullet caused $200 in damage to the door.
If you think you know anything about this failed attempt, call police on the Crime Stoppers line at (704) 334-1600. Crime doesn't pay but Crime Stoppers does.
