LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) -

It's been a long 24 hours for Roger Lowery who had to shoot a suspected murderer entering his home.

Lowery said he didn't want to do it, but he had to do it to protect his family which includes a special needs child.

"It's hard because I've never had anything like this happen before and I've never shot anyone before," said Lowery.

Lowery described the tense moments as 29-year-old Jermaine Grier, who police say was assaulting his cousin on Grier's front porch.

"He was beating her on my front porch and trying to shove her head through that glass door whenever I tried to stop him," said Lowery.

Police say around 9:30 Tuesday night Grier shot and killed his Brother-in-law, 48-year-old James Hood in the Caroline Court Apartment Complex.

Police still don't have a motive for the shooting.

Officials say Grier then went to his relative's house on West Brooklyn Avenue minutes later and began arguing with his female cousin.

The argument turned physical with Grier shooting at his cousin one time, grazing her in the neck.

The two eventually ended up in Lowery's front yard and porch,

Lowery tried to defuse the situation, but the two men got into a tussle.

That's when police say Grier went into Lowery's home and Lowery had to take matters into his own hands.

"He came into my house after me and when he did, I shot him," said Lowery.

Lowery says he warned Grier to leave several times before shooting, even striking Grier in the nose with the gun and pointing it at Grier's head.

Officials say Lowery will not be charged in the shooting, since Grier entered his home unlawfully.

Lowery says he's happy he helped save his neighbor's life, but he does not consider himself a hero.

"Her family met me at the sheriff's department and there were a lot of people that came up to me and told me thank you for saving the girl's life or he would have killed her," said Lowery.

"If I were screaming for help, I would somebody to help me, but no I do not consider myself a hero. I did what I had to do to save my family's life and keep that girl from dying," he continued.

Grier remains hospitalized in Critical condition under police custody.

Grier faces murder, attempted murder and burglary charges and has an extensive criminal past in Lancaster County.
