Sheriff Jim Matthews has won the sheriff's seat for another term.

Kershaw County voters elected to keep Matthews as head of the sheriff's department.

"I want us to continue the modernization process," Matthews said. "We have a long way to go. We are actively in the process of becoming an accredited law enforcement agency that I think that will be accomplished by the fall. That is a standard that law enforcement agencies are trying to obtain."

Around 8:20 p.m., challenger David Thomley conceded to Matthews.

Four years ago, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews defeated challenger Thomley, the man hand-picked by the old sheriff who ran the show for years.
