The Polaris, the iconic blue, flying saucer-looking restaurant that sits atop the Hyatt Regency in downtown Atlanta, reopens Tuesday after being vacant for the last decade.

The landmark dome once dominated Atlanta's skyline. The futuristic restaurant first opened in 1967, lighting up the night sky and becoming a prominent symbol of downtown Atlanta in postcards and other images of the city. At the time, it was one of the tallest structures in Atlanta, hovering over the 22-story hotel.

Since then, much taller buildings have overshadowed the structure, making it difficult for most travelers to see it as they pass through the city.

Hotel General Manager Peter McMahon said that the Polaris once again features a gourmet restaurant and bar that slowly rotates to give guests a breathtaking, panoramic view of the city.

The Polaris was featured Tuesday on Better Mornings Atlanta. Click here to visit Polaris's Facebook page.
