AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

On Saturday night friends and family gathered in Americus to remember the legacy of Millard Fuller.

Fuller founded Habit for Humanity in the 1970s with a goal to eliminate poverty.

He served as president for nearly 30 years, and built more than a million homes in 100 countries.

Dozens of people were at the Clarence Jordan Center for a indoor picnic. Fuller passed away in 2009.

"You know Millard had a tremendous impact on housing of course, but also on the whole notion of volunteering and how to do something bigger than what you think you can do. The real message that I would like people to take away form this is that the vision lives on," says David Snell, President of the Fuller Center for Housing.

"The goal of Habit was to eliminate poverty housing in the world. However we though we needed to do it here in our hometown first," says Linda Fuller Degelmann.

Americus officials have approved renaming a street in honor of Fuller. The ceremony will kick off on Sunday with a parade.
