Forsyth County deputy continues recovery following courthouse shooting

A Forsyth County Sheriff's deputy is expected to make a full recovery after he was shot by a heavily armed man at the Forsyth County courthouse Friday morning.

According to a sheriff's spokesman, Deputy James Daniel Rush was shot while trying to stop 48 year-old Dennis Marx from entering the courthouse with a bevy of weapons and explosives. Marx had been due for an appearance that morning to answer for drugs charges from 2011, but instead showed up an hour late, apparently with intentions to wreak havoc.

"It appears as though this was a very planned assault on our courthouse," said sheriff's spokesman Doug Rainwater. "He had homemade bombs. He had hand grenades attached to himself, so he was ready for battle."

Rainwater said Marx was taken down by nine courthouse deputies after he drove his car to the front steps of the building and opened fire on Rush.

Several bullet holes were clearly visible on the side of the building Saturday, as the building remained closed. Rainwater said the facility will likely be shut down for several days until repairs can be completed.
