CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Charlotte say a young girl who was found wandering an apartment complex has been identified and reunited with her mother.

Just before 4 p.m., a resident at an apartment complex on the 1100 block of Falls Creek Lane saw the little girl walking around. Police said she may have Down Syndrome.

Just after 8 p.m. police said the girl had been identified and was being returned to her mother.

Police say the mother told them she left her daughter with a babysitter, who is about 60yrs old.

The babysitter let the little girl go to the store with her adult son but CMPD say someone found the child alone, and wandering. That concerned citizen called 911.

Police say DSS took custody of the little girl, while officers tried to track her parents down. CMPD say they sent out reverse 911 calls to the neighborhood.

About two and a half hours later, the girl's frantic mother call 911.

Investigators are now trying to determine how and why the child ended up alone.
