CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - In April, Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP and Office 2003. The products still work but Microsoft won't be creating any new patches to fix security problems.
Scammers are now searching for Windows XP users and trying to take advantage of them.
Our cyber expert, Theresa Payton, shows you how to spot the red flags and she has some advice on how to find legitimate support. Her tips follow:
1. Offers for support and service for a low monthly price that really don't provide any support at all, or worse, take enough information from you to commit id theft
2. Click on a link to get security updates and bug fixes that really allow the cybercriminals to place spyware or malware on your computer
3. Cybercriminals emailing, calling, writing you claiming to represent Windows Helpdesk, Windows Service Center, Microsoft Tech Support, Microsoft Support, Windows Technical Department Support Group, or Microsoft Research and Development Team (Microsoft R & D Team).
How to spot the red flags:
1. Microsoft's Online Safety and Security Center states neither Microsoft nor its partners make unsolicited phone calls.
2. An offer that sounds to good to be true
3. If you do research to check on the company and find you cannot validate they are a legitimate business
Getting Legitimate Support:
If you want some local support, there are reputable companies. Go someplace like the Better Business Bureau to find a BBB Accredited Business, ask friends, or go research places on Angie's List to find someone you can trust.
