Police: Caregiver steals $115k from elderly patient

A Charlotte woman is accused of stealing more than $115,000 from an elderly woman she'd been caring for since 2011.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, 56-year-old Cindy Starnes Hudson was arrested on Friday and charged with exploiting a disabled/elderly person.

Police say Hudson was a long-term caregiver for an elderly woman from July 2011 until December 2013.

"During this time Ms. Hudson lived with the victim in order to assist her with daily needs," police told WBTV. "Shortly after employment Ms. Hudson began handling the victim's finances and bank accounts and began presenting the victim with checks to sign, saying that it was money the victim owed related to her care and needs."

According to police, the victim's friends became suspicious in December 2013 after Hudson was appointed as the Power of Attorney.

They investigated and found Hudson was exploiting the victim's assets "to benefit herself and others."  Police were notified and began a police investigation.

That's when police discovered Hudson has stole more than $115,000 between July 2011 and January 2014.

Hudson was arrested on Friday and bonded out of jail on Saturday.
