MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Professional golfer John Daly is known for his wild wardrobe and other excesses, but the part-time Memphian admits he's gambled away at least $55 million.

Daly wrote about his admitted gambling addiction in a book, but it's making news again thanks to a new interview with Yahoo Sports. The loss involved a slot machine that was $5,000 per pull.

"I played that maybe five times, five or six times," he said about the millions gambled in less than 20 years. "I thought it might have been 20, 25 [million dollars], but I had no idea it was $55 to $57 million."

Daly says tax records revealed the extraordinary amount of his gambling losses.

Licensed professional counselor Ebony Bailey says gambling is like other addictions; the action and adrenaline John Daly talks about can be overpowering.

"It can affect anybody, no matter your race or socioeconomic class, anything," said Bailey.

She believes the attention surrounding Daly's admission could prompt others to seek help.

"Because they're out in the spotlight. It helps others to see that they also have a problem," said Bailey.

"I should say I regret it, but I did it, I move on from it. I had a lot of fun doing it," said Daly.

John Daly usually plays the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, which is next week. At this point, he has yet to receive an exemption.
