CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A locker room thief cut locks and stole credit cards at the Harris Express YMCA in SouthPark.
The gym is located in the swanky Piedmont Row section of SouthPark. One recent afternoon, a young man in a white shirt walked in and wanted to buy a pass to workout.
Surveillance shows him signing the paperwork and paying his fee from a large roll of cash he took from his pocket.
Once inside, he quickly cruised past the workout areas and headed straight for the locker room. While inside, police say he used some sort of bolt cutter he'd brought along in his gym bag, to cut locks from two lockers.
15 minutes later, he left with people's possessions-- a watch, wallets, cash and credit cards. But before he left, he changed shirts, from white to plaid.
"It's unusual," said CMPD Detective Marty Cuthbertson, "I don't know if he wanted to make himself look like he'd been working out."
Within an half hour, the same man was spotted shopping some high-end department stores at SouthPark Mall. He pays for one purchase with a stolen credit card. And when the clerk asks for ID, police believe he used the stolen drivers license to finalize the transaction.
"And he was making a large quantity purchase to the point where the individual who owned the credit cards, the credit card company called him immediately."
While the victims were talking to cops at the Y, both started getting fraud alerts that purchases didn't fit their spending habits. But it was too late, the cards were already charged.
Police say the toughest locks to break are those disc locks-- thieves usually bypass those for something more inviting.
