Homeowners assessing damage from Friday hailstorm

Posted: Updated:

Homeowners are assessing damage after a line of storms went through the WBTV viewing area Friday evening.

The hail storms began popping around 4:30 p.m.

York and Lancaster counties saw the largest hail.

Viewers in Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Indian Land reported seeing golf ball-sized hail.

In several cases, homes and vehicles were damage.

Tom Bartholomy, with the Better Business Bureau, is now warning homeowners to be wary of door-to-door inspectors trying to trick you into doing business with them.

"We've seen that people are actually signing what they think is actually an inspection report and it's committing them to do business with this company, even before they have given you an estimate or you know anything about them," Bartholomy told WBTV.

If you notice home damage, the BBB recommends immediately filing a claim with your insurance provider.

However, be aware, filing a claim for "questionable" damage can get your insurance policy terminated.

"The (insurance) inspector comes out, their adjustor comes out, and says there really is no damage here and so we are not going to pay for any claim. Well, even people that did that were having their homeowners coverage canceled because they were seen as a risk or someone who is basically trying to take advantage of the insurance company," Bartholomy said.

The BBB advises homeowners to thoroughly inspect damage before filing a claim.

Bartholomy also told WBTV, in most cases, filing a homeowners insurance claim will not increase cost of coverage. That is not true to automotive claims.
